THE FIRST ALL GIRLS CHARTER SCHOOL IN DELAWARE IS APPROVED FOR 2010 OPENING IN NEW CASTLE COUNTY

Delaware, April 16, 2009— Reach Academy for Girls, the first all girls charter school in the State of Delaware, has been approved by the Delaware Department of Education to begin recruiting for a fall 2010 grand opening. Reach Academy for Girls will be located in Wilmington and will serve grades K-8. Reach Academy will begin recruiting a multi-cultural student population in New Castle county for first year enrollment starting with grades K-1 and 5-6, adding a grade each year to reach their full K-8 enrollment.

This new school for girls’ number one priority is to work closely with parents to develop some of the brightest and creative leaders in the State of Delaware. The vision of its founder A Leslie White was to create a unique opportunity to serve children in a way that gives them the best academic advantages. "We will do this by providing a rigorous research-validated curriculum aligned with the Delaware Standards that not only challenges children and raises their level of personal achievement, but also motivates them to become more active readers, intellectually curious and responsible individuals. Our uniqueness will come from our ability to nurture the gifts of each girl though our ‘STAR’ achievement model, which encourages girls to reach for the stars!"

The 5-point ‘Reach STAR’ compact requires the girls and their parents to set individual goals for academic achievement, individual aspirations, life skills/ personal development, physical well being, and family/community efforts. Reach Academy will be an active participant of the Charter School Network and will provide their girls with social and extra-curricular activities through partnerships with other co-ed charter schools.

To make the vision a reality, Mr. White has recruited and formed a board of educators, community leaders, parents and professionals to work together to deliver a first class, single-gender choice for families that may not be able to afford the expensive private school options. This board recognizes that many families welcome a choice comparable to prestigious private schools that have proven that single-gender education is a powerful producer of confident leaders.

Founding Board Members include A. Leslie White, Founder, Edith Moyer, Chair, Charlie Brown, Esq., Secretary, Laura Brown, Treasurer,

Valerie Brown-Baul, Tony Benson, Vanessa White, Cynthia Smith, Chris Lucas, and Mary Ford.

A spokesperson for the Reach Academy for Girls founding Board of Directors says, "These are exciting times and we are enthusiastic about the Delaware Department of Education’s decision to support and increase the diversity of public school options available in the state, giving parents and students a choice."
